Impacts of Unhealthy Diet on Oral Health

Good nutrition and good oral health are closely linked. Today, our Richmond Hill dentists share some of the effects of an unhealthy diet on your oral health.

An Unhealthy Diet & Your Oral Health

Having a diet that is high in sugar can greatly impact your oral health. Although most foods - such as milk, fruit, and vegetables - contain some level of sugar. Not all sugars are created equally. It is necessary to eat some foods that have sugar in them, such as fruit, because of the nutritional benefits that they contain.

Foods high in processed sugar on the other hand typically have little nutritional value. To regulate your sugar intake, it’s important to read food labels as often as you can. This will help you choose food and beverages that are low in sugars. Avoid eating foods like candy, pastries, soft drinks, and other sweets on a regular basis.

If you notice that your gums are sore or tender and have been consistently eating foods high in processed sugar, this could be the culprit.

Healthy Choices

Besides sugar having a negative effect on your oral health, if your diet lacks certain nutrients, it can be more difficult for the tissue in your mouth to resist infection. Be sure to eat a balanced diet full of fresh vegetables, fruits, and proteins. Talk to your dentist or doctor about what the best diet is for your body.

To maintain your oral health you should also be sure to brush twice daily and floss once a day. And of course, don't forget to visit the dentist for regular professional dental cleanings

Stay Hydrated

Drinking lots of water is also important to keep your mouth moist. The more water you drink, the more saliva you produce. Saliva is able to protect both hard and soft oral tissues. If you have a dry mouth, try switching to sugarless candy or gum in order to help stimulate saliva.
